The Importance of 1619

The Importance of 1619

August 20, 1619 is the date that was part of the beginning of the times of America. Including, American slavery. It was the year when 20 slaves had been taken to Jamestown, Virginia. Later, nearly 50,000 slaves would be taken from the country of Angola to Virginia as well. The Virginia House of Burgesses, Virginia’s first elected assembly was also established in July 30, 1619. 1619 is the year which is detrimental to why all Historically Black Colleges and Universities had opened. Slavery had taken away the freedom to receive an education to learn about how to be successful in society. It is the year which should inspire everyone since it took over two centuries for slavery to end and two centuries for Historically Black Universities such as Hampton University in 1868  or Howard University to open in 1867. Every on August 20, remember 1619 and why you can be successful.
