Georgia's First Black Senator Is An HBCU Grad
Morehouse Grad, Raphael Warnock, defeated Kelly Loeffler to become the first Black Senator from Georgia.
Warnock is originally from Savannah, Georgia. He is the son of two Pentecostal pastors, Jonathan and Verlene Warnock.
Wanting to follow in the footsteps of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, Warnock attended Morehouse College where he earned a B.A. in psychology. He then earned a Mastor of Divinity, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.
In March 2014, Warnock led a sit'-in at the Georgia State Capitol to press state legislators to accept the expansion of Medicaid. He was arrested during the protest.
From June 2017 to January 2020 Warnock chaired the New Georgia Project, a nonpartisan organization focused on voter registration.
Warnock supports expanding the Affordable Care Act and has called for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. He also supports COVID-19 relief funding. He is a proponent of abortion rights and gay marriage. He opposed the concealed carry of firearms. He also has long opposed the death penalty.
Warnock has two children.
