There was a time when it was against the law to teach a black person how to read or write. In response to this, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established to serve the African American community, particularly during a time when segregation laws prohibited Black students from attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs). HBCUs have a rich history and continue to play an important role in providing higher education opportunities to Black students.
Howard University School of Law (HUSL) located in Washington, D.C., Howard University School of Law is the oldest HBCU law school in the country. Many famous people have graduated from Howard Law School. Founded in 1869, Howard Law is one of the most well known and well respected HBCU law schools. The median undergraduate GPA of Howard Law Students is 3.41. The median LSAT at Howard Law is 153.
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law is located in Durham, North Carolina. Durham is a nice college town with Duke University being down the street. North Carolina Central University School of Law was founded in 1939 and has an impressive list of graduates.
Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University is a historically black law school in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 1947. The school is accredited by the ABA.
Southern University Law Center (SULC), located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a public historically black law school that was founded in 1947.
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) College of Law is located about 3 hours away from the Main FAMU campus. Located in Orlando, Florida, FAMU College of Law is a public law school that was founded in 1949.
University of District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law: Located in Washington, D.C., the University of District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law is a public law school that was founded in 1992.
