Former Alabama State standout Tytus Howard named NFLPA's 2023 Black College Football Pro Player of the Year
Houston Texans offensive lineman Tytus Howard has been named the 2023 NFLPA Black College Football Pro Player of the Year award. Presented by the NFL Players Association, this honor is bestowed annually upon a distinguished professional football player who attended a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
Howard, who played college football at Alabama State from 2016-18, was drafted by the Texans in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has started all 48 games he has played in over his four-year NFL career, including all 17 games in 2022.
In 2022, Howard was ranked as one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL. He allowed just three sacks and five quarterback hits all season, and he was named to the All-Pro Second Team.
In the last two years, only 5 HBCU players have been drafted into the NFL. Howard provides hope for football players at HBCUs, and he is an inspiration to all who have followed his journey from Alabama State to the NFL. He is a deserving recipient of the Black College Football Pro Player of the Year award.
In a statement, Howard said, "I am honored to be named the NFLPA Black College Football Pro Player of the Year. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Alabama State University and all HBCUs. I hope that my story can inspire other young people to pursue their dreams."
Howard is the second HBCU player to win the NFLPA Black College Football Pro Player of the Year award. The first was former Grambling State quarterback Doug Williams.
The NFLPA Black College Football Pro Player of the Year award is part of the NFLPA's commitment to HBCUs. The NFLPA has a number of initiatives in place to support HBCUs, including scholarships, internships, and mentoring programs.
