HBCU GRAD and Congressman Elijah Cummings passes away at the age of 68
Congressman Elijah Cummings was born in 1951 in Baltimore, MD.
While attending Howard University he served as the sophomore class president, student government treasurer and the student government president. He became a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
He practiced law for 19 years before being elected to the House of Representatives in 1996.
In the Maryland General Assembly he served as Chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and was the first African American in Maryland history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore, the second highest position in the House of Delegates.
Cummings was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus during the 108th US Congress.
Cummings was reelected 11 times never receiving less than 69% of the vote.
Cummings was married to Maya Rockeymoore Cummings who was elected chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party in December 2018. They had 3 children.
