Michigan's Only HBCU Set To Reopen in 2022

Michigan's Only HBCU Set To Reopen in 2022

The Lewis College of Business, founded by Violet Lewis in 1928 in Detroit, was the only HBCU in Michigan. Dr Lewis started the school with a $50 loan.

During its 75 years, over 2,500 students graduated from Lewis College, and close to 27,000 attended the institution. Unfortunately, the school closed in 2013.

D’Wayne Edwards, a Portland footwear designer, plans to reopen the school with a design focus. The reopened school would be known as the Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design. It would be the nation’s only HBCU to reopen after closing.
